We’re usually less than kind here at The Occult Section when it comes to the slew of paranormal “reality” TV shows that are obviously staged and/or faked in the quest for ratings (e.g. Ghost Hunters, Finding Bigfoot, Chasing UFOs, etc.). Obviously, as people with passions for the paranormal, we don’t like seeing the facts skewed, even just a little bit. It just gives the general public a distorted view about what we really do, and what really happens on an investigation. So we like to call shenanigans on such shows where applicable, usually with our own brand of twisted humor, and we will never back down from doing so.
That being said, we would never wish any harm on any of the people involved in these shows. So it has saddened us to learn that Ryan Buell, from the A&E show Paranormal State (which also features his group, the Penn State Paranormal Research Society), has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was hospitalized yesterday, July 19th, for kidney failure and released later in the evening. Pancreatic cancer, unfortunately, is one of the toughest cancers to cure, mainly because the symptoms don’t become apparent until the later stages of the disease. I doubt there is a person alive whose life hasn’t been touched by cancer in some way, myself included.
Our thoughts are with Ryan as well as his friends and family, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
Best wishes to Ryan. This young man is way too young to be looking at this. I hope he will overcome this and feel much better. It’s a scary thing for anyone to be looking at this, and I send my good wishes his way.

Never in a million years would I have ever thought this would happen to a person so young.
Please pray for Ryan. Prayer helps!
I wishz Ryan well. Now lets talk about you saying these paranormal shows are fake. Other then Taps go on one of the shows like with Ghost Adventures then come tell me how fake they are or even ghost.

@Jenn I assure you, they are all quite faked. There is tons of evidence online showing behind the scenes footage and client testimony about how things were staged to make things look more exciting. No paranormal researcher ever captures that much evidence. Until, miraculously, they are on a TV show. It’s just common sense.

I used to love watching, the best, when Ghost Hunters first started and nothing happened. It was the thought that something might, and the stories, legends and locations. I am sorry for Ryan…who could not be. Whether or not it was fake, it was his job to make it interesting. I would not give up having my own reality show just because the ghosts are not cooperating.

@Kelly People make choices, Karen. I have been offered to be on TV shows where they were planning on faking evidence to make it more interesting, and I declined to appear. You said yourself that “Ghost Hunters” was more interesting when it was more realistic. Some people don’t want reality, they want entertainment.

This is not even about what’s real or fake in paranormal investigating. This is simply about a young man battling a horrible disease. Don’t los sight of what the message is here. Keep Ryan Buell in your thoughts (and prayers, if you so choose) and hope that he is able to recovery from this. Leave the debates over fact or faked for another thread. There’s plenty of time and space for that elsewhere.

I’m a HUGE fan of Paranormal State and couldn’t believe it when I read the news about Ryan. It almost brought me to tears. But we have to think about some key things… he’s young, he’s a strong guy, he was totally healthy before this, he’s incredibly head strong, and he’s a very positive person with a strong religious belief. All these things can and will contribute to him being able to fight this, if the doctors caught it when he was this young, most likely they caught it in time and he will be able to over come it giving his strength. There is a walk for cancer in Flagstaff called The Climb For Cancer which takes the walkers up a 7.5 mile road up to the Snow Bowl which is the ski area on the San Francisco Peaks (the 12,000+ ft high mountain in Flagstaff). I will not only be doing this for my family and friends who have had cancer and fought it, but now I will also be doing it for RYAN. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and friends. Ryan… YOU CAN BEAT THIS. YOU CAN FIGHT THIS. Stay strong, stay positive, we love you!
