Set of “The Vampire Diaries” haunted?

I know here at The Occult Section, stories of celebrities talking about their haunted homes or sets is usually covered by Laura Pennace, but seeing as how she’s on a bit of a sabbatical, I thought I’d cover this story. It seems as though Nina Dobrev , who stars on the CW show “The Vampire Diaries,” is claiming that the set is haunted. I don’t watch “The Vampire Diaries” myself (I have these two afflictions called “good taste” and “high standards.” Then again, I watch professional wrestling, so who am I to talk?), but I’m always interested when someone has a good ghost story to share. How long before the obligatory “Ghost Hunters” crossover?

May 3, 2011 — The stars of “The Vampire Diaries” may be working on a haunted set. Nina Dobrev, who plays characters Elena and Katherine, claims the cast and crew got some very eerie vibes from the set while filming at Gaither Plantation in Covington, Georgia.

Cleveland fans who watch “The Vampire Diaries” on Cleveland’s WBNX, know the series can get pretty spooky from time to time. However, it seems that Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and others may be the ones getting spooked this time.

Dobrev says several unexplained experiences took place during the 2010 shoot in Georgia. Things such as a piano playing by itself. “The A.D.’s [assistant directors] started screaming, ‘Stop! Whoever that is stop the music. We’re rolling. Cameras are on.’” However, when they walked into the room no one was there.

Nina also claims that lights throughout the plantation would flicker on and off for no reason. “The lights were just spontaneously coming on and off,” she remembered. “I don’t think we’ve shot there since.” What do you think? Could part of “The Vampire Diaries” set really be haunted?

These claims don’t seem overtly paranormal, to me. Electrical problems plague old buildings all the time, and with as many people as there usually are on the production of a television episode, I’m not surprised somebody heard music. It could have been a ringtone, and iPod, anything really. And plantations seem to be all about promoting their “haunted” potential lately, so maybe the ones spooking the crew weren’t ghosts, but clever business people?
